Location - Location - Location
The 7th Annual Lake Geneva Technology Academy for Pre-K-12 Teachers will be held again at Badger High School. We will utilize the commons area for registration, meals and large group activities. The Badger LMC, business education, English, agriculture, graphic arts and science computer labs will be used during the week for the instructional workshops. The keynote address will be delivered in the recital hall shortly after registration on Monday morning. University course registration begins on Monday at 7:30 a.m. Bring your checkbook. The Lake Geneva Technology Academy is open to teachers from all area school districts.
Credits -
3 graduate credits are available through two different universities. Registration takes place on site Monday morning. You may apply for credit through Cardinal Stritch University or Viterbo University. Cardinal Stritch requires a copy of your undergraduate transcript from your university. This usually can be requested by visiting your university's website and downloading, completing and mailing a form along with a check for the transcript request fee which usually ranges from $5-$15. Viterbo requires no undergraduate transcript.
Cost -
Course fee is $600. You will need to write 2 checks on the 1st Monday of the academy. One to Cardinal Stritch University or Viterbo University, depending on which one you have chosen, and one to Badger Community Education for the balance of the course fee.
(Lake Geneva Schools employees who plan on taking the academy for credit and wish to be reimbursed and recognized by the school district for your credits must obtain a GOLDENROD COURSE APPROVAL, ADVANCEMENT, REIMBURSEMENT REQUEST FORM from your school office. Fill out both sides. Your Principal must sign it. Then, submit it to Judie Taggart at district office ext.1011. Make a copy for your own records.)

Course Requirements
All workshops have required assignments determined by the instructor which will be due on Friday and submitted before you leave. Your completed projects in the workshops will be evaluated in order to determine your final grade.
Field Trip
On Wednesday morning, we will visit one area business to get a tour of their facilities and discuss what technical skills young people entering the workforce are required to know. The businesses will be
Parking
You should enter Badger High School using the commons entrance which is entrance "I". The Badger High School commons faces Lake Geneva Middle School and the athletic complex. Parking is available in this lot and the student lot accross the street as well as the faculty lot near the fine arts classrooms.
Meals -
Continental breakfast each day. 1 hr. Lunch on your own.
Dress
Dress casual. Be prepared for air conditioned rooms which cycle on and off throughout the day.
Walking Groups
Groups will form on the first day if you are interested in some exercise. The high school provides miles or corridors through which you are free to roam to get in a little exercise. We also have access to Bigfoot State Park nature trails. Bring your walking shoes.

Detailed Workshop Descriptions
Beginning Microsoft Word 2007
This workshop is Word basics and not all the “bells and whistles” of the Microsoft Word program. Participants will be introduced to the Word environment. Learn to create, edit, enhance documents, format text and paragraphs, use built-in tools to increase the accuracy of your document. Participants will also create and format tables adding graphic elements, inserting symbols and special characters to a document/table. You will also learn to control a document’s page setup and its overall appearance. The workshop requirement will be to create one flyer (or sign) in Word using WordArt, inserting graphics, and manipulating the page setup for a final eye-appealing document. The second workshop requirement will be to create a table (bring a class list, checklist, etc.) into an eye-appealing document.

Advanced Microsoft Word 2007
Most teachers only use Word to type documents, but do you know how to jazz up your documents with borders, graphics and free floating text. Work with these tools and also learn how to make tables, create brochures, design rubrics quickly and easily, and set up a mail merge that will allow you to create personalized student communications that you will effortlessly be able to use throughout the school year. (If you have something specific you would like to learn, just let me know!) This session will show shortcuts, how to solve simple common problems and exploring some of the many features these programs have to offer.

Digital Bookmaking
Learn how to turn your digital pictures into a "coffee table" type book. Use your vacation photos, pictures of family events or pictures of a field trip an make an awesome book. Use programs from Kodak, iPhoto, Walgreens, Wal-Mart, iRemember, Epson Storyteller, Mpix or My Publisher to turn your pictures into a beautiful presentation. Bring digital pictures on a jump drive or picture disc. Requirement: create a 10-20 page book ready to print or order on line. PI 34.02 Teacher Standards: 2,3,6, 7 and 8.
Digital Storytelling
Participants will learn how to take writing to a new level using technology. Using Microsoft Photostory 3, participants will go through the process using storyboards to develop and create a final story using images, music, and movement. Examples of using digital storytelling in different genres will be shared. Participants should bring a USB flash drive with any photos or music you might use to create your own digital story; or to save any files you create.

Photoshop for Beginners
This workshop is designed to give the participant an introduction of how to use some of the most common tools of Photoshop CS3. The first part of the workshop will be spent learning about basic tasks such as importing photos, selection techniques, and retouching. Participants should also be prepared to bring their own digital images to the workshop to modify existing pictures and use Photoshop to create other graphics.
Portraits of Your Community
This workshop will be the integration of digital storytelling and MP3 players with a research focus on your community. Participants may choose to bring along a student to learn the process with. Together, teacher and student will learn how to research and create a podcast or vodcast of a chosen focus area. This is an opportunity to learn with a student,but bringing a student is not a requirement.
Digital Photography
The goal of this class is to give the new digital photographer a basic understanding of the camera. Learn to use your camera to its fullest potential. Covers basic camera settings and getting a good picture - composition, lighting, flash, resize properly, add text and get your pictures from the camera to your project or printer. Learn how to incorporate into a PowerPoint presentation and also publish the project. Bring your own camera if possible.

Palm Handhelds
This workshop is recommended to Academy participants who will be purchasing or already own their own personal Palm Pilot. In this workshop, participants will learn the basic applications: Date Book, Address Book, To Do List, Memo Pad, Calculator, HotSync, RealOne Player, beaming information to another Palm, etc. Participants should bring their school and/or personal calendars, address books, birthday/anniversary lists, e-mail addresses. Participants will be inputting their own information into their new Palm Pilot as the requirement for this workshop.
Microsoft Publisher 2007
In this workshop, participants will learn the basics of Publisher. This program is an easy to use, flexible program for creating newsletters, brochures, business cards, postcards, flyers, etc. for print. Participants will be creating a publication from scratch or may use one of the hundreds of business and personal design templates available in Publisher. This workshop requirement will be to create three useful documents (i.e., newsletter, business card, greeting card) for your classroom or personal use.

MP3 Players in the Classroom (Podcasting and more)
Have you ever wondered about the power of the MP3 player to enhance student learning? Participants will learn how integrating this small device can be used to promote literacy and content area learning. Besides learning how to create a basic audio file with the MP3 player, participants will learn how to use a free sound editing program, Audacity, to edit and finalize an audio file. Ideas of how to use the MP3 player in the classroom and beyond will be shared as well as the integration of the newer video capable MP3 players.

Lake Geneva Schools provides webspace for each teacher in the district. Teacher webpages are easily edited and maintained via the SchoolFusion browser editing tools. Learn how to add and edit text, add photos, make calendar entries and much more on your SchoolFusion web page.

PowerPoint 2007
This hands-on beginning course will cover PowerPoint, the graphics presentation component of Microsoft Office. A PowerPoint presentation consists of a collection of slides that may be shown while giving an oral report. PowerPoint slides may include text, drawing, charts, outlines, sound, video, and graphics. Windows MovieMaker
Learn ways to Film, Edit, and play back various classroom projects for your students. A unique learning tool that can be used over and over again. This is also a great opportunity for your students to give class presentations. Check this hands on workshop out and see how easy and useful this form of technology can benefit your curriculum.
iMovie
iMovie is one the most user friendly movie making programs on the market. Use Apple’s recent version to learn how to create professional looking movies. iMovie incorporates video, stills, audio, and graphics to create great looking products in very little time. We will discuss and create projects that could be used in the classroom or for personal projects. Turn your next classroom event or birthday party into something that could win an Oscar.

Classroom Gizmos and Gadgets
In this session, participants will be exposed to several different pieces of technology that can enhance the modern classroom. Hands on use of online grading resources, audience response systems ( clickers), handheld smartboards, podcast production handheld microscopes and how to save and incorporate video clips from YouTube will be featured. To begin the workshop, we will demonstrate a online grading tool (called Quia) that will make your classroom easier. This program can also make review games to keep all learners engaged. Classroom lickers are an interactive student response system using handheld remote controls that actively engage every student in the classroom. Teachers can use them to poll the class, check for understand and even give a paperless quiz! The handheld whiteboard is a small device about the size of a piece of paper. It is a wireless way to walk around the classroom where the teacher or student simply “writes” on the whiteboard slate and their work gets displayed a screen via a LCD projector. This is a smartboard product and many applications that go along with smart boards will work with this device. In our Podcasting section, we will go over the basics of what is needed to podcast (mostly free items) and how your students can benefit from podcasts. A step by step booklet on podcasting will be provided. We will also demonstrate the use of a handheld microscope for the classroom and show you how to infuse YouTube clips into your powerpoint presentations to make them much more dynamic and interesting.

Geocaching with GPS
Learn how to use a handheld GPS unit to get into the outdoors. Geocaching is one of the hottest new trends using technology. Get your exercise while searching for caches and learning how to turn the outdoors into a giant game board. Parts of this class will require us to be outside. Be prepared to have fun rain or shine. We will also be taking a look at what other teachers are doing with GPS units in their classroom and how you can incorporate them into yours.

Learn how the SMART board can integrate into your regular lessons. Experience hands-on training and develop lessons that are ready to implement into your classroom. See how kids can be more involved in learning new concepts. Learn about grant opportunities and fund raisers for purchasing a SMART board for your classroom.
United Streaming - Digital Video in the Classroom
In a time when our students are becoming increasingly digital dependent, wouldn’t it be great to tap into this medium to complement what we are doing in our classrooms? With Discovery Education’s United Streaming, educators can explore the vast library of over 77,000 content specific video clips, sound bytes, and pictures. In this workshop you will discover how to use these clips to hook students, remediate a topic, and use as stand alone lessons for your classroom. All video clips, accompanying supplemental materials, and lesson plans are aligned to state standards. Webpage Design Basics
This workshop is designed to give the participant an introduction into how to build webpages using the new Dreamweaver CS3 software. The first part of the workshop will be spent learning the basic software tools, then you will get a chance to build a sample website from scratch. Participants can choose to bring their own text and images to create their site, or use a step-by-step tutorial to create a sample site.
